A proven fact for most of golf's greatest ball strikers (Hogan, Trevino, Price, Singh, Garcia) is that they return the handle of the club at impact to the same position it occupied at address. This video discusses that point and shows an excellent drill to help you get closer to achieving this "holy grail".

  • mate, u are a donkey, look at your set up position, you look like the hunchback of Notre Dame. And its a stupid drill,no golfer on earth returns the grip at impact to address position, the hands are always ahead of the ball at impact, if Freddie Couples returned grip to same place he wouldnt hit it at awesome as he does, look at Hogan and every other great at impact, dumbest vid on youtube

  • okay i must be board... You are right, but this will not help people. this position will happen automatically with being in position at top of backswing and initial move down... now where did i put my scotch?

  • @andrewricegolf

I've given this drill in the past (and still do) but with a foam swimming tube. Some slicers can get around this if they swing from out to in enough, so I go to other aids. For better ball strikers who make this change, an equipment tweak is a must. Sometimes as much as a 3-4 degree flatter lie angle, shorter clubs, etc.

  • @yoda19781 Andrew mentioned how the best of the best ball strikers returned the shaft on the same plane as it started. He's correct with very few exceptions (hitting specialty shots). Obviously this is not a requirement to be a fantastic ball striker but if the elite ball strikers did/do this, then there is something to it. Andrew would need to make a hour long video to fully explain the dynamics of this move (and would have to explain it to you using small words and speaking slowly)

  • Thanks for the drill. I've seen many drills for "keeping the tush line" where you try to maintain your inclination towards the ball at impact and not stand up, but I've never had much luck with it. I'll give this one a try.

  • nice drill, very good for getting that hogan type position at impact. i've just converted to a one plane swing and am trying to emulate hogans swing to a degree, i'll have to try this one and get back to you

  • Hi Andrew - just bought and read your ebook "It's All About Impact". I think you are really onto something with this and can't wait to start working on some of the drills. Thanks.
