You know that one bit in The Conversation?

Yeah. Here's a disturbing little advert (actually it's one of those ads that straddles the line between "commercial" and "public information film") made by Friends of the Earth in 1993 to promote their then-new "Mahogany is Murder" campaign - since then regulation has been introduced, and certain unethical practices have stopped, but not all of them and not by everyone. If in doubt, buy some other kind of wood instead. There's plenty of faux-mahoganies, what difference does it make?

Vocals by Jonathan Pryce.

  • Has anyone else noticed that the voice on this ad sounds like the speaker's actually sitting in a cubicle?

  • @TigerWalrus26980 I think that's just the compression. It's just Jonathan Pryce.

  • is your title for this video from the smiths meat is murder?

except you put wood instead of death

  • @Anotherrnumber Yeah.

  • Couldn't Friends of the Earth pick a more tasteful object made from Mahogany instead of a toilet seat?

  • Toilet seats are, or were at the time, the main thing mahogany was used for in Britain.

  • or Nightmare on Elm Street.

But it looks more like diarrhea than anything, and that would make a hell of a lot more sense XD

  • If people stop buying it, then there will be a lesser demand for future mahogany furniture. Decrease in demand means fewer trees cut down. Supply and demand is what all business is based on...if there's no demand for mahogany, there'll be no mahogany trees cut down.

It's you that lacks insight, not the ad.

  • Okay, who wants chocolate milk now!?

  • @PIFMan092 When was that show? Do you have it?

  • @devvomashup The Lynx anti-fur ad set on the catwalk.

  • @PIFMan092 What 18 rated ad was that?

  • @devvomashup I think it might've been shown on Channel Four (they were always screening charity ads and controversial ads. They were the first ones to screen an 18 rated cinema ad on TV).
