The Pied Piper Of Hamelin was originally created as a Sunday night TV special in 1957, by the Dumont Television Network, in an attempt to compete with early network TV broadcasts of MGM's The Wizard Of Oz. It was not originally intended to be a theatrical release. In fact, after its original TV dates (the first being November 26, 1957), it vanished into obscurity for many years. The music here is by Edvard Grieg the great Norwegian composer. The Hall of the Mountain King was famously used in the 1931 film M, in which Peter Lorre's character, a serial killer who preys on children, whistles it. • The best scene in the movie. Every time it was on TV when I was a boy, I waited for this scene.

  • thing is rats can swim...

  • I played the Pied Piper in a school play 2 years ago. I did great during this scene.

  • This is a classic. Maybe someone could use the Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Greig in a film in 2010.

  • I think some of your info may be incorrect. This either was produced before 1957 for theaters, or was produced later by some network other than DuMont. DuMont Network ceased broadcasting in 1956. And as far as I know, they never had the ability to show anything in color (as there were none but a few experimental color sets in existence)---color broadcasts were pretty much a rare novelty before 1965 or 1966, when NBC became the first network to broadcast all its programming in color.

  • Now that's one way to get rid of rats! Awesome.

  • wtf

  • amazing how he got an entire symphony orchestra from one pipe. lol love this movie and this piece is one of my favorites.

  • What music mother? that badass musical score that can be played anytime now and people will stop and listen because it is so good.

  • This has always been a favorite piece of music for me.

Now I'm going to have to find the movie.
