Considered among the pioneers of the Pushto ghazal, Ikramullah Gran is known for his distinctive style. The poetic images created through the 153 ghazals in his collection, Zama ghazal (My ghazals), enchant the heart while appealing to the mind. His way of dealing with subjects such as love, humanism, sorrow, peace, spirituality , sympathy and Pakhtoonwali have earned him great acclaim. Even the father of Pushto ghazal, Amir Hamza Khan Shinwari, has commented on and appreciated the poet's talent, referring to him as the 'youth of Pushto ghazal'.

When Gran started composing poetry, Pushto ghazal was at the height of progressivism and romanticism. Surprisingly enough, the towering presence of Hamza Baba, Qalandar Mohmand, Ghani Khan, Ashraf Maftoon, Ajmal Khattak and others could not discourage his growth. Gran has mentioned, in the foreward of the book, the names of some literary figures to whom he owes a lot for helping him shape his ideas.

Gran's verse contains serenity and a compromise with the present. He takes care not to let his soul grow rebellious. The first poem in the collection, 'Khwaga zahar' (Sweet poison), was inspired by a news item about a lost illegitimate child back in 1959. Gran's realism sounds different from the other poets of Pushto ghazal because there is a rational rather than an emotional approach towards the social values and norms. (www.Khyber.org)
