WONG:
The best vocalists from around the world came to New York to take part in NTDTV's 2008 vocal competition. Our correspondent on the ground, Zhu Feng, has more on this story.

STORY:
The competition was pretty fierce. But in the Bel canto female group, Ms. Hong Yuqing, from Taiwan won, a gold medal. And for those of who don't know, Bel canto is an Italian musical term, referring to the art and science of vocal technique.

Hong Yuqing believes that an artists skills, ideology, and background, are very important in interpreting songs, and that every concert is a good opportunity to improve oneself.

[Hong Yuqing, Bel Canto Winner]:
"In addition to skills, everyone has a different personality and a different background in which they grew up in, and a different ideology, thus everyone will interpret things differently. Also, through this performance, we can find a way to do better."

In the Folk Singing female group, Singapore contestant, Xu Fenglin, received the highest award. She hopes her songs will resonate with the audience.

[Xu Fenglin, Folk Singing Winner]:
"Use your ear to sing, no matter which corner you are at, which stage you are on. I hope at that moment, people would like my singing, and that I would resonate with them."

The overall winner of the Chinese Vocal Competition was Mr. Ming Hong, of the United States. He won the Bel Canto male group gold medal, and a $10,000 prize. He told us that in the final round, he chose to sing the song, "We know," which he sang in 131 performances last year. Many people in the audience shed tears upon hearing the song.

[Hong Ming, Bel Canto Winner]:
"Through the arts, we can also convey beauty, pure righteous music, and the compassion and beauty that human kind wants to express."
