What if your value to your employer was decided by the sum of the last four digits of your social security number? Or you know of a teacher accused of a serious crime that is paid to go away, along with a positive letter of recommendation? Or you win state-wide recognition for your teaching achievement, only to be fired the next day because someone else had been there longer. It happens in American public schools every year. Do tenure and seniority benefit students and their success? http://kidsarentcars.com
@MsJanetWood It's not brain surgery. The biggest problem with teacher tenure, etc. is in how it basically shuts the door to the new, the best of the new generation. If the budget shrinks, our measure to correct shouldn't be to simply cut off the least senior. That not only cuts the lowest-earning, but it also cuts some good teachers. Why not be selective, and actively look to keep the best of the young, and bring their talent (and low salary) into the mix?

I keep hearing the words, "effective teacher," and yet, no one seems to be able define them adequately.

As well as these side agreements being made and bad teachers getting new jobs under false pretenses (yes false pretences because you past performance is looked at in all other jobs) should be stopped. At the very least made public and in the worst cases they should not be working as teachers again.

Experience is valued but not the top priority. Results is always number one. In most jobs if you are not preforming it does not matter how long you were their you will be let go instead of the person bring results to the table, Which is as it should be.

In any job, EXPERIENCE is valued!
Look at the classified ads:
"Must have EXPERIENCE!"
"EXPERIENCED preferred!"
"Willing to train the right person!'
In the WAITING FOR SUPERMAN movie, Geoffrey Canada states, " I actually know how hard it is to be a GOOD teacher.
It took me 3 years to become a DECENT teacher, BEFORE I really LEARNED my CRAFT. And then in about 5 years, I was a MASTER teacher."
Michelle Rhee only taught for 3 years, she never got her teaching credential!
