Pileated Woodpecker

that's an awfully big pecker!
with all that hard wood laying around i can see why a big pecker is needed.
those big peckers are pros with their tongues too. they sure know how to use their tongues on that hard wood.

I was just picking pears in the backyard.Up on top of the ladder with an extension so I could reach the big one...when all a sudden I heard a pileated`s sound and turned to see it.Out from the trees it shot squacking wildly then right behind it was a red hawk...zeroing in.The pileated did a loop like fighter jet squacking away and the hawk followed only a few feet behind,again the pileated did another loop turning to it`s side this time and shot back into the treeline escaping
