Keep the sharp end of venomous animals away from your person at all times. My reaction does not represent what may happen to you.
Scolopendra heros arizonensis (Giant Desert Centipede). 4" juvenile. These average 7-9 inches with reports of a foot on the high end. I have seen very heavy-bodied 8-9 inch S. heros in zoos/museums and two 6-7 inchers in the wild.
First time I have ever found these in the Superstition Mountains, and first I've managed to catch myself.
3 hours since the bite: First noticeable effects past mechanical damage. Very slight swelling at bite site, small local stabbing pain, throbbing, numb and stiffness of finger. Small time stuff. Slight cramps in neck and side, heart rate increased, numbness in right leg, right arm. Cramping, numbness on the right side of the face, jaw in particular. Slightly more fatigued breathing. Discomfort is around 1/10. Seems to be a delayed reaction. Only potential issue is a discomfort around the heart and sporadic but small increases in heart rate. Most of this would be unnoticeable if I wasn't concentrating on it. Can't discount the mental aspect.
4 hours in: Brushing teeth confirmed for taking mind off effects. Only significant effect is that elevated hear rate plus discomfort in chest.
5 hours: Slight numbness remains. Tingly, cramped up hand. Respiratory and heart issues gone.
Verdict: Packs a punch for its size. Needs further testing once capable of sinking fangs further into skin.
