    ...or you could use general luminous efficacy ratings, because sitting around speculating means nothing. I've read that carbon arc efficiency is dismal at around 10lm/w, making this around 30,000 lumens. What do you mean by 500 watts? 500 watts of what? LEDs, at around 70-80 lm/w (35000-40000 lumens)? Quartz halogen at around 24 lm/w (12000 lumens)?

  • @Mycologist i would think the only precise way to know would be to measure the light output directly, allot of the energy will be lost as heat and magnetism, it would probably be very hard to calculate the heat loss and such.

  • @iminyourbasement One would presume by measuring the voltage drop across the lamp and the current being drawn and multiplying them, finding total power consumed by the arc, then estimating power lost in heat and subtracting that estimate from the first figure?

  • and how exactly do you know it is 3000 watts? it looks like 500 to me.
