Crosspicking guitar was first used by George Shuffler in bluegrass music with The Stanley Brothers, It is properly done with a down, down,up pattern, check out videos with George Shuller or James Alan Shelton. Most pickers don't seem to be able to play the proper pattern, as I think they start playing alternating pattern, picking fiddle tunes and then find it difficult to switch.

Couldn't tell for sure - are you using up/down fingering or economy fingering?
