none of the people talking understand how lucky they are.

@inheritancerecords yep. he kicked the habit in late 02, was clean for a good year, but people love to wrap themselves in the media-fueled drugged rocker fantasy of him dying a long slow death. these people ignore or don't know about FACTS: his 2nd to last recorded song ends with him declaring "feeling stronger every single day". his last song suicide machine is a full length complaint about people labeling him a sad sack. his inconclusive death. his improving performances in 2003. i could go on

"better stop now
before i start cryin"

This is the most confident and assured I have seem Elliot Smith play, Think I love him

@doomrat Well, his comment is spot on, it's pretty damn sad. Just look at Elliott here compared to concerts posted on youtube that he did 3-4 years before this...it almost hurts to see him look like that. His performance here was still great, however, in Heatmiser and up until around 2001 he was clean-cut and looked healthy. When I see an Elliott video and he looks like this, I instantly know it's around 2003 when he died. Heroin really did take a toll on him -- both mentally and physically.

You don't have to be currently using to suffer from addiction, especially with heroin. Heroin withdrawal brings a horrible, make-you-want-to-die sort of pain- one that recurs and doesn't just "go away" after you've stopped for a year or so. It breaks my heart that Elliott had to endure that at any point, but he did- and I'm forever grateful to him for using that suffering to inform what are some of the best songs ever written, that have given us hope and comfort and understanding over the years.

@sluggojfm That's ridiculous, regardless of how many thumbs up you receive. If you watch his performance, it was spot on here, he looked genuinely content and sang the song perfectly. If you weren't focused on his addictions (that you've read about), you'd never know the guy performing this song (which was brilliantly executed, by the way) had any problems. And that's the real shame here...people can't seem to separate Elliott's music from the reports of his abuses.

How can you tell if someones a "full-blown" heroin addict just by watching them sing a song? Not sure when this video was shot, but apparently he kicked the habit towards the end of his life.

Just fantastic.
Miss you

This man right here, is reallyone of the greatest songwriters I've ever listened to, he's a great guitar player with an awesome voice, and above all, his lyrics are so wonderfully beautiful.
So I have just one thing to tell you elliott, may you rest in peace forever...
