Friday 11th November, a day when two steam excursions would converge on Canterbury, with 60163 Tornado bringing a Cathedrals Express from Northampton to Canterbury East and 34067 Tangmere on the Kent Armistice Day Special, a circular Waterloo - Deal - Olympia tour that would pass through Canterbury West.
First into Kent was Tornado, running slightly late as it emerged from the fog on the approach to Hildenborough.
Moving east, while 60163 took water at Tonbridge, brought us to a roadside spot near Five Oak Green. This wasn't our first choice location. That was found to be unsuitable due to trees, and to the fog.
After Tornado had passed, there was time to move to a foot crossing slightly nearer to Tonbridge before Tangmere appeared.
Tangmere's water stop was at Headcorn, but it proved impossible to reach there before departure time and so we headed across to Selling to await Tornado, and the ECS move from Canterbury to Sittingbourne.
From Selling, it was back to a crossing to the west of Ashford for the return of Tangmere. It was at this crossing that we learned that 34067, in attempting to restart its train away from Deal, had slipped to a stand on the climb to Martin Mill, and that it looked like being stuck there for some time. Rather than stand around waiting, we drove down to Walmer, in search of the stricken train, but found no sign of it there, or at Martin Mill.
With 34067's whereabouts unknown, we turned our attention back to Tornado and moved on to Bekesbourne.
From Bekesbourne, we went to Hollingbourne for one more shot of 60163, but the A1 failed to show, having been re-routed back through Tonbridge.

  • shame about the two missed shots, a fine video of the day though, do like to see the glow from the fire reflected in the exhaust after dusk, great stuff, cheers.

  • Great compilation of clips!

  • Hiya,

We met at Hounslow on 12th October 2011. Nice filming. Barry

  • Your work is always outstanding Martyn, and you never fail to deliver...This is another examle of what can be achieved....Bob

  • Enjoyable to watch as usual Martyn despite the 'logistical' problems. Very atmospheric & authentic as we remind ourselves that steam loco's did not just run on sunny summer weekends!! (lol)

  • wow once again really nice shots

  • Typical Novembers day with the misty conditions.Loads of smoke from the engines makes it all look great .Well captured.EM

  • Well done some nice shot's.

  • Good work again Martyn, a real feeling of autumn turning into winter: exhaust effects in humid conditions can be frustrating but I loved the "Bulleid Wig" on Tangmere and always thought what a nightmare for crews looking out for signals when exhaust dragged down over the cab like that. Alan

  • Great stuff, enjoyed your "thrash" immensely! . . . . . . Alan
