I am ALLAN PHILLIPS a freelance Journalist/Broadcaster, on making a return visit to a vastly changed "Russia", I arrived in the City of Volgograd from England following a "Snow Delayed" flight/journey of 48 hours. The chance to visit the Rodina Statue "Mother Russia" on top of Mamayev Kurgan) during February & March 2008 was quickly accepted.

The Battle of Stalingrad 1942/1943 was undoubtedly the turning point of WW2....The Russian Axis having re-grouped drove the Nazi's back to Berlin, history also shows that the German's surrendered after the suicide of Adolf Hitler in 1945.

The City of Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad) alongside the swirling Volga River was proud to commemorate the 65th aniversary of the battle that claimed some 2 Million + lives.

It is a privilage to present this picture collage to you.... If you are able to visit the Site of "Mother Russia" you will experience a truly impressive tribute to the fallen as we would visiting the New British Memorial at ALREWAS.,..or the various Polish & American sites in the UK...or of course sites in Belgium, Germany, France, Holland and other locations around the Globe.

If you cannot...Here is my presentation from Volgograd (Certainly when you fly aboard a Tupolev 134A airliner as I did,you suddenly become "Religious" in the real sense of the word)...It was a trip I will never forget, meeting some survivors of the Battle of Stalingrad was a true honor....

"We Won The War !! Not the Americans !"... was their belief, who am I to disagree?......Enjoy !

  • I like the determination on her face. You can really tell she's shouting: "Together, we shall repel the nazi scum out of the country!"

Meanwhile, somewhere in the lowest depths of hell, Hitler is weeping...

  • Awesome, just awesome!!!! I'm hipnotized by the Mother Russia Statue,

  • @lukebccb I do not understand what you have written but I believe that the losses were so great because of Stalin who was as militarily incapable as Hitler. Without his interference then losses would have been much less.

  • @alanheath: WOW! You're one of the few that I've run across that "get's it" that the Soviet/Russian people only were able to beat the verminscum of the nazis through the most costliest of costs: their lives......BECAUSE of scum stalin.....

  • The horrendous losses suffered by the USSR in WW2 are in no small part due to the military incapacity of the dictator Stalin and his failure to accept reality. Even by late 1942 when he was clearly listening to people who knew better than he, they too showed incredible brutality. The amount of dead lost in Zhukov's pointless attacks has never been revealed.

Nonetheless the counter attack which led to the encirclement of the the Nazi forces here is the best allied tactical victory.

  • She is emmense and quite beautiful!

  • R.I.P dead soldiers

  • @Chauffeur1 EXACTLY!!!! This song brings me to tears every time I hear it and that is often! THANK YOU Chauffer1.
