Inspired by the book Machine of Death: A Collection of Stories About People Who Know How They Will Die, Shard of Glass tells the stories of several people who learn how they will die, all from one cruel perspective.

Conceived and completed in six days, and shot on the Canon 7D.

Story by Andy Vatter and Donald Chang.

I also have a Twitter too @andyvatter if you're into that sort of thing

For what it's worth, I was always a little leery about "Space" too. I only included it the way it is now because I gave myself a tight deadline and was too in love with the idea of getting "Space" as a result to altogether axe it. Trust me, any re-releases or festival submissions will see it either changed or completely removed. YouTube just doesn't allow changing the video itself.

But I'm also delighted to see any kind of intellectual debate stemming from one of my videos!

  • Just tweeted by Ryan North. Prepare for the flood.

  • I found the "HUSBAND" one really clever, because obviously the prediction will start the chain of events leading to her actual death.

  • I can totally imagine Predictor being made by Aperture Science.

  • This was really fabulous. Kudos!

  • @cliffbike89 I'm pretty sure that's what's causing mine.

  • Ryan's death is "smooching"

    omg

  • @rovingpianist the machine only ever prints the cause of death, i'm pretty sure. i think the dates are just shown in this movie to illustrate how much the machine actually knows but doesn't tell us

  • @TSEDTIKS My mother says Parking Space all the time. I actually like the idea that she spent the rest of her life worying about things from space killing her to be killed by something so mundane. It seems just like the sort of cruel and vague humor the machine would do. I think the problem is because the word space is used differently. It's like if the MoD in the movie had someone choking on pepsi and printed Pop. I'd probably be upset because the use of the word pop isn't one that I'm used to.

  • The cause of death is birth, pretty deep

I'm so glad that someone noticed that! That was my idea in post-production! I was a total dick and made Andy redo the whole bit with Wang to make his prediction make sense with that interpretation. I forget what his original full prediction was.

Unless I'm mistaken the idea is that the machine only prints what's written on the "printf" line. When we were filming the video Andy and Donald just handed us cards when the machine would print them that would say "Depth Charge" or "Husband." No date. The machine blots out the last date because it's scared- if he's going to die from a MoD today and he's standing in front of this one...

  • Also, vehicular manslaughter dude could be named "dick wang" hehe
