Wow! Where do you live at? Can I grow a papaya tree where I live in South Carolina? We do have a winter down here but not as bad as the north in the U.S, but I'd love to be able to do this! And thanks carmia for clarifying where the far end of the fruit was located lol I didnt know what that meant.
What exactly is a Bonsai method? I heard of a Bonsai tree of some sort but not a method.
I cant believe how fast these Papya trees grow, I had no idea!

Hi, We live in Naples, FL, on the gulf coast. You may need to proyect them or put them ib a protected area when it gets too cold for extended periods. Bonsai is the way of growing miniature trees in small pots. It is thousands of years old. The traditional technique uses soil and do beautiful work. I use sphagnum moss as a growth medium and my series of bonsai videos explains that method, which I find easier for most people. See epsodes 1 and 2 of my bonsai videos for an explanation. Jerry

You have a green thumb, I've never seen papayas grow so fast. Lucky you! Goodluck on your bonsai. That would be super if I could make a draft papaya tree. I wonder how large the fruit will be on a bonsai?

Hi, The fruit is usually full size on bonsai. But there are trees that have naturally small fruit that makes for a proportioned looking bonsai. Things grow really well here in Florida. Thanks for writing! Jerry

That is fantastic Jerry, I'll have to do this ASAP. How did you start the papaya tree seeds? Or did you just stick them in the ground. I love papayas, this is so cool. I'll send it to my friends. Aloha Caramia

Dear Caramia, Take the seeds from the far end of the fruit, as I have been told that these will be female trees. I haven't taken the time to check this out. I dry the seeds for a day on a paper towel. Then I plant them in sphagnum moss. They grow like crazy and are very hardy. As the fruits start to turn yellow, I find it best to remove them from the tree and let them ripen indoors, or else the woodpeckers and other animals eat them. Jerry
