London is to host the 2017 World Athletics championships.
Lord Coe, who led the bid, said it means his promise that the Olympic Stadium will have an enduring athletics legacy has been fulfilled.
London beat Doha in a tight race to stage the competition in a vote by the council of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) council in Monaco.
The news was celebrated by British athletes, with heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis tweeting that it was "Brilliant news".
Hannah England, the world championship 1500m silver medallist, said: "So excited that London has won the bid to host the 2017 World Championships! Having The Olympic Games, the Commonwealth Games and now the World Championships all in Britain in the next few few years will be invaluable for British athletics!"
Heptathlete Kelly Sotherton simply tweeted "London!!!! Yay!", while Paralympic discus thrower Dan Greaves' congratulations noted that "Stratford's never had it so good!"
The news is a major relief to UK Athletics officials after previous attempts to stage the championships ended in failure.
A bid in 2001 had to be abandoned after plans to include an athletics track in the redevelopment of Wembley Stadium were scrapped.
London was awarded the 2005 Championships on the promise of a new stadium at Picketts Lock in north London, but they were taken away and given to Helsinki after the Government went back on its promise.
A bid for last year's championships had to be withdrawn due to uncertainty surrounding the future of the Olympic Stadium.
