Old (@100 A.D.) piece by "Mesomedes of Crete". There are no performance indications & I am not a scholar of ancient Greek music, so my performance may not be 'authentic'. ;)

  • This is cool!I tried a much shorter upload of this on my lyre...did you get the actual notation,or did you learn it from a recording?

  • Glad that you liked it! :) I have sheet music for this; I've never heard a recording, so the interpretation is my own attempt to 'get inside' the piece. I have also the music for the "First Delphic Hymn" & the Seikilos Song; source is "Historical Anthology of Music Vol. 1 by Davison & Apel; Harvard. I'm willing to share if you were interested.

(Had a quick look at your channel. A lot of interesting stuff! I may just blow my videos posted/videos watched ratio. ;) )

  • I wish I could get my hands on some notated ancient stuff like this - it is REALLY hard work trying to "play by ear"!I vaguely learnt my humble rendition of this piece from a CD,"Musique de la Grece Antique"...sadly,all of the valuable info on it was written in Spanish! :o(

  • I can sometimes pick up stuff by ear, but I find it hard too, being addicted as I am to sheet music. ;) (Sheet music saves so much time.) If you like, I can take a photograph (scanner's not hooked up) of this music & send it to you sometime in the next day or so. (I have more music than I can possibly learn this lifetime, so I welcome opportunities to make what I have useful to others too).

  • @Klezfiddle1 Translating Spanish shouldn't be too difficult. I'm interested to see both the sheet music and what was written in Spanish. I would be happy to kick my translation back to you once I've figured it out.

  • My friend this is wonderfull

My name is Stelios and I come from Crete the place that probably Mesomedes was born. To be honest I had no idea about his music or where I can find more information about him.

I would apreciate it if you could send me the sheet with this music I would like to try to play it with traditional Cretan instruments.

Thank you very much in advance

Keep up the good work my friend

  • Please send me me copy/picture of Hymn to the Sun (Mesomedes) too. I send you a message also.

    bye
