Renée Fleming in Gounod's Faust - Church Scene

Performance of Gounod's Faust with Renée Fleming. This is one of the best renditions of the Church Scene that I have heard. This excerpt comes from the Paris Opera's 1996 production with Fleming, Giordani, White and Abel conducting.

It's not bad but it lacks the passion and intensity that Freni puts into it. Even that scream in the end is weak. This is supposed to be a highly dramatic moment. Fleming sings it with pure technicality and attention to the beauty of sound - which doesn't fit with the power of the drama in this scene. Marguerite is at Church praying for her soul and the Devil tells her she is damned to Hell!

Willard White is an impressive Mefisto in this recording. His French is not very French, but whose is, these days? Would love to hear him live in the role. Thanks for the post.
