Jurjan, you are 100% correct. The friends should have let go. If they would have let go, the pilot would have flown safely DOWN. The only thing keeping him up is the forward force of the rope being held by the friends. "Mule" towing as this is caused is a very good way to learn to tow. 100% of the people holding on to the rope need to know that the reaction to something unexpected is to LET GO. NEVER attach yourself to a stationary object - not even your friends. :)
