Part 1 of 2 (better video, it's not choppy now)
Part 2: http://youtube.com/watch?v=yBKYMV7eveM

Hello, and welcome to my Final Fantasy IX Perfect Game, without skipping FMVs. I just got a new DVD recorder, so I'm going to record it and put it online. I did this challenge a few years ago when it was just getting all of the items, and it was fun. The "bootleg level 1" version didn't interest me. A few months ago my friends informed me that max stats had been added to this challenge. This very much intrigued me, so I did the challenge again, skipping FMVs. I clocked in at 11:08:13. And that is thanks in no small part to a very well written guide by Atomos199:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/file/197338/41181

and some occasional video help from 1whoistornapart and InvincibleGarland. Some of their videos let me know just how perfect some of these segments could go, and offered a few tips of their own, some that I used myself. Despite some cursing sessions and attempts to harm my PS2 controller, I had quite a bit of fun doing this.

InvincibleGarland clocked in a minute and a half ahead of me, and this was when I was about done with disc 2, so we all already knew that adding FMVs was possible in theory, I'm just actually going to do it. I hope you all enjoy the added FMVs and a few different things that I do with my videos, I'll try my best to make them different from my predecessors' videos.

On with the show. PS2 options set to Fast Disc Speed and Smooth Texture Mapping, this must be done everytime the PS2 is turned on or reset (well the first one at least).

I will make lists of items in the order that I obtain them in the videos.
Items obtained: 47 gil, Potion

Steals and spoils: Wrist, Mage Masher

Thanks to the FMVs this must be split into two parts. I change the configurations to make dialogue and battles go faster and smoother.

I employ 1whoistornapart's FMV pause trick, as everyone who does this challenge should. Maybe not at the beginning of FMVs, but definately at the end. 10-15 seconds can be saved after almost every FMV in the game. I'll make it simpler for everyone though, all you have to do is hold down the Start button toward the end of the FMV until the game pauses, you will never miss the timing that way.

The first part is the hard part, not that it's all that hard. I wanted to steal the Mage Masher in one round. With a few tries the rare steal can be stolen on the first try, and with four thieves I have a rather high chance of stealing the rare steal in one round. This took maybe 8 tries.

FMV 1 - Opening 1: 2:02
FMV 2 - Opening 2: 1:02

I'll add up the FMV time and give an adjusted save time to keep track of about how I would be doing if I were to skip FMVs.

  • is this pal or ntsc ? please comment .. thx

  • @s1dney NTSC

  • Do you think shortening everyones names to 1 letter would cut some time off over all from message boxes?

  • @VashFanboy1 Hehe, I suppose it's possible, but I can't imagine the amount of time saved would amout to anything worth noticing. Surely the amount of time saved would be no more than the time spent erasing all but one of the letters from everyone's name in the first place.

  • @rlouisw correct me if im wrong pls:*pause trick is like a process of buffering,so that the game will run smooth w/o any delays or lag*....,,,so do i still nid to do the pause trick if im using an emulator? which uses an iso not a cd.....cause i think the cause of delays and lag of the game is bacause ur using cd not an iso file...im confused????????help pls ^^

  • @originaleecyaj66 This pause trick works for a PS2 set to the settings I have. I have no idea if this trick transfers to other consoles.

  • @rlouisw Well I know that in an FF7 speed run it helps a lot. But I'm not sure about FF9.
