The BBC Radio 4 shipping forecast, a British institution and still relevant for today's mariners. I find the narration has a hypnotizing quality, and I hope this film translates that feeling. The shipping forecast is broadcast on BBC Radio 4, three times a day.

  • @RichyBMelodies youre missing the point. they cant forecast the weather on board. they need the radio.

You should try living on a container ship in the middle of nowhere with 35 metre waves and winds 120km/h. without the shipping forecast ships could sail into life-threatening situations.

    radio 4 FTW

  • @EverywhereVirtually You need to get in the real world, nobody uses the BBC Shipping Forecast, nobody needs it; it might be quaint and romantic but so is a horse and cart rumbling down cobbles, and do they broadcast a four times daily cobble report? No.

If you want to live in the olden times go back to 1978 with your tobacco pipe sat in front of a wood fire with your pot of broth on the stove and listen to the wireless until 10pm when it goes off the air. You'd love it.

  • @EverywhereVirtually So where is this magical boat then who's whole kit fails except his radio, except that's also a bit broken as well so he can't turn the nob and tune into Marine VHF and hear the shipping forecast from HM Coast Guard?

Where is this magical ship, that should such a magical event happen, and all his equipment fail (except his radio), he wouldn't just turn back to shore?

In your world he'd probably just get out his magic carpet and fly to Narnia.

  • @RichyBMelodies And what happens when your fancy navigation kit fails? Then what? The radio might be the only thing working and you'll be damn glad of this service. Although in your case we'll see you drifting into the eye of the storm, never to be seen again.

  • This is total fucking bullshit.

The shipping forecast is totally redundant.

Radio 4 is the 2nd most popular radio show in the UK, and they still broadcast this shite?

Ships / boats have sophisticated technology to tell them all this shit and don't need a mainstream radio show to repeat it.

This isn't the olden days, this is nowdays man.

  • why is this so relaxing .

  • absolutely magic

  • He went like one that hath been stunned,

    And is of sense forlorn,

A sadder and a wiser man,

    He rose the morrow morn.

  • (-_-) zzzZZZ

  • I thought it was just me who loved the shipping forecast!
