  • Probably as close as I will ever get to hearing the great Horowitz in person on HIS Steinway... Thank you for sharing this concert and your story!

  • Kakarot21591 - truly, my pleasure! it is kind of my mission to carry on his greatness and canon through making as much information available about him as i can.

  • Do you recall what he played as encores after this? Love to know. Thanks!

  • i do - you can hear them in in the following youtube: schumann "traumerei," schubert moment musical, then moszkowski etude in f major.

  • unfortunately Virgil Thomson's critique of VH is very much present in this release: "A master of distortion'"

it is a dance of the Polish nobility, au fond. here exaggeration and bad taste

  • yes, this is the one. have you read my website story of the experience? (it's also, in an abbreviated form, in my most recent book.)

  • Kasyapa, is this the concert where you heard him live? You referenced it in another of your videos, is this the one?

  • he was in a particularly creative mood, and careful to hit the notes very right after the terrible japan concerts of '83. the accents he works into his left hand octaves in the middle section are surreal!

  • dear kasyapa , you does make us happy with these recordings shared with us. hambourg must have been a great event as Mr Horowitz seemed to have been in great form at that time (which was not the case in moscou or london....) this interpretation of the polonaise is absolutely great and the beginning with the accents an interesting element of interpretation never shown before in this particular piece.

  • take a look through my site here - i've got about 130 horowitz things - among them is the complete 1985 concert. :)
