Focal Length

The focal length of an optical system is a measure of how strongly the system converges (focuses) or diverges (defocuses) light. For an optical system in air, it is the distance over which initially collimated rays are brought to a focus. A system with a shorter focal length has greater optical power than one with a long focal length; that is, it bends the rays more strongly, bringing them to a focus in a shorter distance.

what do you think about the 15 - 55 mm lens which comes with D5100 nikon. i am going to buy it soon. I understood most of the concepts in the video. Quality of the images with 15 -55 mm will be satisfactory? I want to capture some nice shots on the wedding event of my friend. I am a beginner in photography so your advice would lead me to a good decision.Thanks

15-55mm is good wide zoom lens to cover group shots in wedding photography, but not sure the quality of the lens, it's good to look at MTF chart for that lens before making the purchase.
