AUGUST 2003: Asked If Rumsfeld Was Wrong On Troop Numbers, McCain Replied, I Dont Know. Upon his return from Iraq, Senator McCain was asked on CNN in August of 2003, Theres about 140,000 U.S. troops there now, and Secretary Rumsfeld is saying again after this bombing that he believes that is enough. Is Secretary Rumsfeld wrong? Senator McCain responded, I don't know. My point is, first of all, that I think we need a larger Army because we have commitments in Afghanistan where we don't have as good a control as we should, to say the least, outside of Kabul.
