Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, president of the party of European Socialists, talks about energy dependence
European energy independence is a fantastic, important, question. We must go our own way. It is not sustainable to be dependent upon Russian oil and natural gas. It's not sustainable to be dependent on oil at all. So, in the long term renewables: wind power, solar power and a lot of other independent renewable sources of power should be used. We have all the experience to do that. In the Scandiniavian countries 24% of our energy consumption is by wind power. When we can do it you can do it. All over Europe you can join ourselves in investing in renewable energy and thereby also create new jobs. And on the top of that what we can do is to be more energy efficient. To do that is demanding more and more investments and we can isolate our houses so that we bring down our total energy consumption. So a new green path, a new green growth for Europe is our way because therefore you have a better energy policy and you have more green jobs in the future.
