The Santa Fe Institute is the world-leading think tank in Complexity Sciences. Join SFI faculty and staff and hear about their latest progress in understanding the theoretical foundations and patterns underlying the complex systems that are most critical to our future -- economies, ecosystems, conflict, disease, and human social institutions. SFI was founded in 1984 in Santa Fe, New Mexico by a team of scientists to advance the then-nascent science of chaos theory and complexity. By freely synthesizing ideas from many fields, SFI has made major contributions to the world's understanding evolutionary biology, emergent behavior, artificial life, social networks, quantitative finance, international relations, conflict resolution, and the origins of human language. Its' faculty, postdocs, and staff include physicists, biologists, anthropologists, computer scientists, and economists, all collaborating across conventional disciplinary boundaries.
Speakers:
Kenneth Joseph Arrow, Ph.D. Economist. Dr. Arrow is considered, along with Paul Samuelson, one of the founders of modern neo-classical economics. His most significant works are his contributions to social choice theory, notably "Arrow's impossibility theorem," and his work on general equilibrium analysis. He has also provided foundational work in many other areas of economics, including endogenous growth theory and information economics. Nobel Laureate, 1972.
Raissa D'Souza, Ph.D. She is associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and Computer Science, and is a member of the Complexity Sciences Center, at the University of California, Davis.
Chris Wood, Ph.D., Vice President of SFI.
Presented on September 28, 2010. Additional information on the MIT Club of Northern California website at http://www.mitcnc.org/
