Nothing to really see, more of an observation.
Everyone surely is familiar with Funiculì, Funiculà" even if they don't know the name. It is a famous song written by Italian journalist Peppino Turco and set to music by Italian composer Luigi Denza in 1880. Now the Luigi part is a coincidence but would including a bit of this song be composer Alan Silvestri's way of touching the Italian theme of the Super Mario Bros in the score? Just a thought!
Great find! It's probably intentional, the Mario Brothers are supposed to be from italian descent, and Silvestri himself has italian roots.

I loved the movie. I still do in fact. I don't mind the mistakes, seeing how the bright colorful world of the mushroom kingdom seen in the games would have looked weird in live action.

Definitely intentional. One does not do this by accident.
