The arrows used in kyudo (Japanese archery) are very, Very sharp. There are ancient Japanese inscriptions depicting kyudo that date as far back as 280AD. kyudo could be much, much older than this.

  • The documentary has been played in the program called "Einstein's eye" on NHK.

  • Yes NHK are repeating their best programmes. NHK is my favourite satelite channel!

  • This is pretty insane. Considering the draw weight of the yumi bows (they are not very hard to draw), this kind of power and penetration is outrageous. Thank you for uploading this.

  • I'll try and put more Japanese stuff on youtube - but am wary of copywrite laws. .

  • What is the name of this documentary?

  • Toob - this is a clip from the Japanese "NHK" channel. I'm writing this from memory - but I think the programme is called "Beyond the human eye". "NHK" is available on satellite tv.

  • this vid is so stupid. it misses the entire concept and purpose of kyudo... the power of and arrow piercing anything is pretty much a given. its the concentration and discipline of the practitioner that should be taken account for.

  • @TYKKETYKKE No. The yumi can have all kind of strength up to at least 27kg (or Newtons) and that, I assure you, is not so easy to draw. Physics applies in Japan too. There is nothing special in the piercing power in kyudo.

  • @RedRafiki With a normal sport bow it would be quite easy doing that. Not so easy with a yumi and it exactly illustrates my point that kyudo is not any kind of superpower-ninja archery style. They have wasted their super speed cameras on the arrow hitting the target while the most interesting stuff is happening with the archer. I would love to see yugari (the turning of the bow) in slow motion! I'm sorry, but this is just an another case of Americans getting stuff wrong and being proud of it.

  • @LikeAPossum yeah, but not any semi-decent archer could do that...... i get what a lot of people are saying, kyudo is more spiritual than martial, still i'd advise all the haters to just TRY IT, let's see if you can even hit the plate.

  • This is a typical American lame pseudo documentary. Arrows pierce stuff, no shit Sherlock! Kyudo itself is completely inconsequential here. You could do that with any semi-decent bow!

  • More of Sakura Murata!!!!!

  • Sakura Murata is very cute.

  • Theres just something special about the Japanese.

Whatever it is, they manage to somehow make it beautiful.

Here in the west, archery seems to be thought of as merely a sport that anyone could do, but in Japan it seems to be so much more about form.

  • @vicb0t This is only one side of the medal. A strong and powerful shot is more impressive than a weak one. you cannot handle a strong bow without being disciplined.

  • So how heavy is the draw weight?? Is there anything about the design that makes them more powerful??

  • @vicb0t there are other videos for that.
