This was recorded on last summer's "Friends Beyond Borders" Social Justice Tour in the Dominican Republic. The group visited with activists, teachers, community leaders, and everyday people to learn about globalization and human rights from a variety of perspectives and in a variety of contexts.
On the afternoon this video was shot, we visited a garbage dump where men, women, and children were surviving by collecting plastic bottles. A full days work will yield about $1 or so each day. We have all read about the many people in the world who live in extreme poverty, but after working side by side and getting to know one another, now the people behind these "statistics" had a name.
Listening to this woman sing as we tried to deal with the heat and discomforts of the environment, proved to be a strangely beautiful and haunting moment.
