Another point that supports my idea: If you notice while the priest was touching his face, a normal stroke would've went all the way down, but the priest's hand stopped halfway and suddenly went off his face. It was as if he felt all the loneliness and sorrow that has been accumulating in Xiao Yao all these years.

@Msblurrysotong This is my interpretation: First you have to remember the Taoism priest has found his "Way" and became almost god already. He believes that like a god he has no more human emotions nor does he have the right to intervene in regular human lives. When the priest touched his face, I think he felt all the pain Xiao Yao has gone through, so Xiao Yao asked if he really understands. You notice in the end the priest put his head up and breathed in (holding in his tears)
