TRANSLATION NOTES:

In Japanese mythology, a Baku is a dream/nightmare devouring spirit. You can read more about it on Wikipedia.

"What do I look like?" / "Donna sugata wo shiteiru no?"
Literally "What appearance am I doing?". I first translated it as "What appearance am I donning?" but decided to change it to "What do I look like?" just to make the line sound better in English.

"Sweet stories and savory, naughty fantasies" / "Kanbi na SUTOORII, Tanbi na in mu wo"
He's literally calling the lewd dreams "aesthetic". Going from that, I decided to translate it as "savory" because 1) it *does* mean "pleasing to the senses" and 2) it fits nicely with "sweet stories". And the whole, you know, eating your dreams thing.

"If you just indulge yourself in 'dreams', your dreams will never come true" / "YUME ni oboretara yume wa kanawanai"
The first line uses the katakana writing for 'yume' (dream) as opposed to the kanji writing, giving the impression of scare quotes.

Additionally, if there was a slightly creepier way to interpret a line ("rest in peace" vs. "rest peacefully", "dead of night" vs. "middle of the night") I went with that one.

My personal take on the song is that this trickster spirit ensares an innocent girl by consuming her nightmares. Then he eats all of her hopes and dreams, leaving her with nothing but a depressing black and white reality~

Any and all questions or suggestions are welcome!

  • @Kasumi231

I am quite familiar with the video statistics. This isn't the original video source, only a translation/reprint. Seeing as how almost everyone in Japan is watching the original on Nico (the Japanese equivalent of Youtube), you can't look at these statistics and make a conclusion like THIS SONG IS MORE POPULAR IN THE US THAN JAPAN. And if the comment was about the translation itself and not the song, then, AN ENGLISH TRANSLATION IS MORE POPULAR IN THE US THAN JAPAN WHY YOU DON'T SAY.

  • So, from what I see. I'm probably wrong, but the Baku helps her to have beautiful dreams and such. Then once he's done, he takes away her sight as the payment? So she's blind and can't see the true world of beauty?

  • omfg i want a sexy baku like this. *-*

  • So this song is about a girl who asks help from a baku, he does, then he kills her? WOT?

  • @MrThebakugannerd

It's a mythical creature of Japan that eats people's nightmares or dreams when some one commands or asks to.

  • I'm not a Len fangirl, but I must admit that little squeak is rather adorable.

  • What's a Baku?

  • @Artsykitty123 It'd be even better if it was Kaito or Oliver ^.^
