Update: The tower of Bannerman Castle collapsed a few weeks ago (late 2009) so this is some of the last footage of the full ruins.
34 miles north of Manhattan is the ruins of a castle - on an island. Accessible by kayak (many thanks to StormKingAdventureTours.com and Nicole Shore of ZeroToSixtyCommunications.com) this was the home of a war profiteer, selling military surplus until they were his home's demise.
Oh, also an excellent drive over the Brooklyn Bridge.
Interesting comments from the tour guide about halfway through:
"'You'd better not pull those vines down, they're probably holding the building up.'"
"The architect told us that what was happening was these buildings were leaning against each other, and that's what's holding them up."

Unfortunately, more of the castle collapsed last week.

It's a good thing that you went there when you did, the tower on the right side of the entrance to the castle has collapsed.
