'Ryuichi Sakamoto Launches Eco-Friendly, Carbon-Free European Tour, New Albums: out of noise & Playing The Piano
Sakamoto is traveling to expose his music through ustainable and ecologically sound practices, and has created a tour that leaves no carbon footprint -- zero. While recording out of noise, Sakamoto visited Greenland with the Cape Farewell Project, as part of the group's cultural response to climate change. He recorded under the surface of the Arctic Sea, and on the surface of glacial ice.
1994 - Sakamoto's first green initiative came in with a change to his CD packaging from the old fashioned plastic jewel case landfill -- to biodegradable, eco-friendly paper packaging. Since then, he has done anything possible to focus on reducing carbon emission and raising environmental awareness.
2001 - Sakamoto instituted major initiatives to use alternative energy while touring; he carried a small windmill and solar panel to generate energy during the tour.
2005 - Sakamoto completed two 100% carbon-free tours of Japan.
2006 - All products released by Sakamoto in Japan were carbon-free. His Japanese label, commmons followed apace and became that nation's first green label, which operates its administrative activities using alternative, renewable energy.
2007 - All commmons-produced packages became 100% carbon-free.
2007- Sakamoto launched the "moreTrees" initiative to conserve and plant trees in Japan and international territories. Reforestation is widely regarded a critical component in combating global warming, as trees' foliage absorbs CO2 while releasing oxygen.
Sakamoto's inspiration of nature in his music, as well as his discovery of new ways to release music, was honored with the Echo Award for The Most Innovative Musician and Musical Tour 2009 at the United Nations Environment Programme's Eco Festival in conjunction with World Environment Day at the Royal Park in Brussels.
Sakamoto continues to dedicate himself to find new innovative ways of being ecofriendly through his music activity and creativity' http://www.sitesakamoto.com/data/press20091015.html

'Climate change is a reality. Caused by us all, it is a cultural, social and economic problem and must move beyond scientific debate. Cape Farewell is committed to the notion that artists can engage the public in this issue, through creative insight and vision. The Arctic is an extraordinary place to visit. It is a place in which to be inspired, a place which urges us to face up to what it is we stand to lose'
