It has been a year since Ireland called for international support to bail out its banks.

Since then, statistics appear to show the economy has stabilised, but the economic situation for people on the ground is very different.

There are more than 2,000 abandoned developments, known as ghost estates, as the country's housing boom was found to be built on sand.

Al Jazeera's Laurence Lee reports from central Ireland.

  • YOU KNOW WHAT I CAN'T UNDERSTAND ABOUT IRELAND! if something stirs up between catholic and protestants there killing each other in the streets. But then the banks along with the government pull the carpet underneath everyone and no ones doing a god dam thing.

  • Is Iceland the only country with any sense?

  • @ukipwarrior Krauts got twatted by the British? If you're over-nationalistic self is reffering to WW2, then you are a disgrace to humanity's intelligence. The British would've had their arses handed to them if it wasn't for the US Army/Air Force & more importantly the Russians. They did the dirty work. Your troops coudln't defeat average farmers & the IRA. And why are you talking as if you contribute to jack-shit? I respect the UK, but not morons like you. At least Ireland recovers.

  • @slapshot37GNR No 1 to riot in ur shitty rock ur just getting fucked in your leprechaun arse by german banksters now !! Krauts got twatted by the british but now we are going to let them pound the irish paupers and fuck them HARD

  • @ukipwarrior Well from what I can see, nobody from my area is moving to that shit-hole. Unemployed yanks are coming over here, though. Loyalists are moving to Britain because they're copping on that they'll never stand a chance once that Union Jack is taken of its pole. And we're not the ones rioting...nobody likes England they're a bunch of cocky and ignorant idiots who repeat history and fuck themselves over. Where's that British Empire ye' always bragged about? Oh, yeah...

  • @slapshot37GNR fuck off u paddy cunt all moving to British colonies looking for jobs now arent u u poor irish twat fuck off with your shitty little rock in the atlantic.

  • @ukipwarrior No bailout cash? £77bn bill ring a fucking bell? Hey, I'm glad Ireland's recovering. They're exporting like mad, more than before the IMF bailout. Actually, they're the biggest exporter of software equipment. The Irish Agricultural machine is sucking diesel, so that's a great thing. I miss the 20th C. though...we all lived in a great, beautiful country while the British suffered in the South prior to our independence. The the Provos shoved y'er Union Jack up your scumbags' arses.

  • Fuck Ireland they are basically a tax haven for britain fuck em no bailout cash from the UK!"""

  • how sad to see all those ghost estate images... so many investments going to waste!

  • It's clearly because of the EU and EMU

  • The only problem with Ireland is that there are too many Irish there, ha ha...Only joking...great music, great dancing...brilliant Guiness...

  • @RandallSteen Iceland had the luxury of been outside the Euro. Ireland were told in no uncertain terms by the EU that we couldn't burn the bond holders who had lent to Irish banks because it risked causing contagion around all European banks in 2008. This was when the world was in intensive care post the near economic collapse. Ireland didn't want to be the one to hit the nuclear button. The stakes were too high.
