Excerpt from News12 broadcast covering filing of a lawsuit by two volunteer firefighters, Dino D'Angelo and Connor Hamilton, against Springfield ex-fire chief Wayne Masiello claiming he forged results of a 2007 entrance exam to get his son a spot on the paid department.
In October of 2008, after a lengthy investigation by the Union County Prosecutor's Office, Masiello was charged with forging the exam results which pushed his son, Adam Masiello, and former Captain Michael Bilotti's nephew, Jeremy Bilotti, to the top of the hiring list. Captain Bilotti was terminated from the department just weeks earlier when it was discovered that he allegedly forged his GED to gain employment on the fire department.
"These charges are the culmination of a lengthy but necessary investigation," said Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow after the forgery charges were filed. "It is regrettable, however that Mr. Masiello corrupted the testing process, which is a disservice to all those who competed fairly to serve their community."
