the lotus is a buddhist symbol meaning "purity"...lotus flowers are known to grow in mud and then bloom beautifully out of the muddy water untouched. they are a symbol of rising above the bad influences around you to emerge pure in mind, body and soul.
I appreciate the artistry behind the tattoo, it really was well done, and I also appreciate her reason for wanting it...but it just irks me when people get something because it's pretty and not consider the actual meaning.
