That is Hermann Bäumer (on a Lätzsch trombone), Berlin Phil. member from 1992-2003. He also played with the Triton Trombone Quartet. Nowadays he works mainly as a conductor. He is currently Generalmusikdirektor of the Staatstheater Mainz.

Amazing to think this is only a few years after Berlin was fully re-united!

Sir Georg is the greatest to me. But I am a little partial as I am from Chicago. It doesn't matter if it is Wagner Beethoven Mussorsky or Shostakovich he has the best interpretations. It doesn't matter if it is my beloved CSO or Vienna or,London .He gets the best out of the best. Music misses him.

Im not familiar with this interpretation and you're inferring he takes it too slow or too fast? Im curious. Which conductor would you suggest, who does this magnificent climax best?

Generalmusikdirektor? That's the sort of title I could get behind. I'd put it everywhere I could.
