Here is how an analog vocoder works. I am not going to use technical "jibberish" so I will speak normal vocabulary. This is the legendary EMS Vocoder 2000 (from 1977) which soundwise compares against Sennheiser, Moog(Bode), Synton, Roland, Korg. I will give a basic demonstration on how to use a vocoder and how a vocoder functions to give it that "robotic" sound. I used an Oberheim OB-8 Keyboard to trigger the pitch on the vocoder

  • What kind of Vocoder did the BBC use for the Daleks and Cybermen in the classic series? Was it the same kind Universal did for the Cylons?

  • @MrJacMac1986 They actually didnt use a vocoder for the two,, they used a ring modulator for both and this is the vocoder used for the voice of the Cylons

  • At 1:52 it sounds like the tone for Man Made- Man Parrish. Great demo! I wish I found this sooner!

  • I asked Man Parrish what he used and he told me it was this same model, the EMS 2000, and that it was sold to him from ELO Electric Light Orchestra used in their song "Mr Blue Sky". Man Parrish and Jean Michel Jarre are just TWO of many reasons why I was influenced on getting this vintage monster-it DOES contribute towards my mixes!!!!

  • My boyfriend has one he wants to sell. Contact me if you are interested and I will put you in touch with him. He bought it from the guy who used to make them (Robin Wood) in the UK.

  • How much does he want for it in US Dollars?

  • @AnalogVocoder1 This needs to be updated/corrected!!

Bode, EMS, and Synton three-way tie for #1 (for now).

    Moog #2.

    Sennheiser #3.

    Roland VP-330 #4.

    Roland SVC-350 #5.

    Korg VC-10 #6.

I can't rank the Sky Soundlab The Voice Spectra, Analog-Lab X-32, or the others until I've heard a sufficient amount of their vocoding.

  • @intromix I actually remember reading somewhere that he used the 1000, 2000, and the 3000. Along with the Korg VC-10.

  • @DrRClavan The Beastie Boys used the inferior to the EMS 2000, Next! VOX-II Vocoder/Filterbank.

  • 3:24 hahahahahhahahahahahahah

  • @intromix I do believe that I read that the ring-modulator used for the Daleks and the Cybermen was also made by EMS!!

  • @intromix Actually they used the beta-version of the EMS Vocoder 2000W Mk1!! NOT this which is the EMS Vocoder-System 2000B Mk2!

  • thats. so. awesome..
