Vicky : Hey, Amy, I am so bored and hungry now. Do you have any good ideas about some places to visit? You know, I am a person who loves eating very much and knows how to enjoy my life!

Amy : Really? But you always just swallow the food without tasting the flavor and you don't like to enjoy the scenery when you travel.

Vicky : No, I don't. That's what you always do, not me! But can you recommend some really good place?

Amy : Of course, I can. Come on. Let's have a competition to see who can do a better job to describe something! So, how about a place with lots of delicious food which has a long history.

Vicky: Oh? Where is it? I think that I can explain the history no matter where it is! It's my specialty.

Amy : Ok! Then I'll recommend some delicious food for you. It's the most ancient street in Taiwan ----An......

Vicky: I know! It's An-ping Street. (安平老街) Ok, so let's see who can explain the food or the history better!

If you want to go to An-ping (安平) , take a train to Tainan station (台南站) , and then take the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle (台灣好行) —Tainan City Tour Bus (台南觀光巴士) at Tainan City 88 An-ping Route (台南市 88安平線)
Tickets and Transport Information
Fare: NT$18/one way
Half Fare Ticket:NT$9/one way
Ticket center: Tainan Railway Station (台南火車站) -Ticket service in Kaohsiung Bus Station (高雄公車站) or buy a ticket on the bus.
You also can take the Tainan bus 2 (台南2號公車) to An-ping. (安平)

Fu-cheng (府城) in Tainan is the earliest developed area in Taiwan, and the first built street is Yen-ping Street (延平街) in An-ping District. (安平區)
The traditional markets at Yen-ping Street (延平街) are more than 300 years old. At first, they were named Taiwan Street. (台灣街)

Amy : Wow, look, there's really a lot of ancient buildings and they have been in existence for a very long time, don't you think?

Vicky : Yes! And there is variety of stone lions. Maybe they were made on the walls or were painted on the doors or were made in the other ways.

Amy : I know. It is An-ping Sword Lion. (安平劍獅)

Vicky : Bingo! Let me talk about it.

Vicky : It is said in 1662, Zheng Cheng-gong (鄭成功) painted some lion faced totems on shields. After he defeated the Dutch and began to exploit Taiwan, his army stayed in An-ping. (安平) They hung lion shields on the walls and put the swords into the lion's iron teeth. It looked like a lion bit a sword. People in An-ping made replicas of the lion bitting a sword and they believe that can protect them.

Amy : The Sword Lions (劍獅) are carved into the wall and door to protect them.

Vicky : Every sword lion (劍獅) is different in An-ping (安平) ! You can't find the same sword lion (安平劍獅) here! It's really unbelievable, don't you think?

Amy : Yes, so each sword lion carving functioned as a house number plate in the past.

Vicky : Hey, look at the roofs! Lord Wind Lions (風獅爺) !

Wind Lion (風獅爺), also called General Wa (瓦將軍). It was said to be the embodiment of Chi You (蚩尤). Another legend said that Lord Wind Lion (風獅爺) was transformed from the God of Wind and called the Master of Wind. Wind Lion (風獅爺) can pacify the winds, conquer the wicked, ward off evil, prevent disasters and resolve misfortunes.

Amy : Look at them, they are so cute! Do you smell something good?

Vicky : Yes! I'm so hungry now. Let's find some food to eat!

Amy : Remember our competition? Now, it's my turn. Let me talk about some special snacks in An-ping (安平) . When you come to An-ping, you can't miss the seafood, like Chou's shrimp roll (周氏蝦卷) or oyster omelet (蚵仔煎) !

Vicky : Yes, the oysters are very fresh!

Amy : And don't forget An-ping's Dou-hua (豆花). Dou-hua(豆花) in An-ping (安平) insists on following the ancient method by using fresh soybeans. It's one of a kind.

Vicky : Yes, it' super!

Amy : An-ping (安平) is known for preserved fruits and sour prune juice. Come to An-ping (安平) , you can eat, play and also enjoy a lot of things!

Vicky : I am so full now. I'm so happy.

Amy : And we also have learned a lot from each other! Let's go home now!

Vicky : OK. I hope that we can do this again sometime soon.
