Stellenbosch University (SU) is opening its research output to the world in a move designed to stimulate research and promote human development, particularly in Africa.
Stellenbosch University became the first African university to sign the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities. The goal of this international convention is to make research freely and widely available to society.
SU has established an open access repository, SUNScholar, which can be accessed by anyone with an internet connection at https://scholar.sun.ac.za.
"The signing of the declaration by the university is a demonstration of its commitment to sharing its research output and other scholarly material with research communities, especially those on the African continent," Ms Ellen Tise, Senior Director of SU's Library and Information Service and President of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, said.
Among the guest speakers was Mark Shuttleworth, an internet entrepreneur and proponent of open source software.
"I believe that the future is an open future and that the institutions leading that process will be the ones that survive the coming shakeout in the education sector and increase their footprint globally," he said.

You know, this guy is actually the reason I started trying Ubuntu. I just like the way he does things and how he talks and thinks about things. He SEEMS like a guy you could just sit down and chill with, drink something good and talk about tech stuff all day long. Nice. I hope his dream comes true, it certainly is going in the right direction now (especially with the Wayland/desktop stuff regarding vsync/tearing, the Ubuntu Store, and so much more).
