when the GE was made only two billion humans existed, and a few million fans were made. Now 7 billion people exist and a billion fans are made. So of course the new ones are a piece of shit. we all cant inherate an old good fan but we can all buy a cheap piece of shit.

It's the hermetically sealed bearings they use so you don't grease things periodically and it'll keep to it's original design goal of planned obsolescence so you will replace it in the future and they have another sale. I bet that older fan also uses ball bearings instead of a bushing style bearings.
