The 'crown jewel' of our collection. This is one of the first few ever made and very few institutions have one. They are simple devices but require a pretty decent investment of time and money. Note about the video: it's hard to make out but the second scene has me pouring a little water into the dish, and steam forms in about 15 seconds.

  • The dish is made of ordinary aluminum, but the shape is important. More info can be found in the December 1963 issue of AJP (available online).

  • I think there are smaller versions of these available now. I've seen some modellers use embedded metal weights in their models to levitate them over magnetic plates.
