THIS IS YORK - Part 1
Assembled from a few scraps of ciné film, this film shows some of the steam locos still to be seen in and around York in the Sixties.

Most of this was filmed in York Sheds which is now the National Railway Museum.

This is the first ten minutes of the DVD This Is York & District which takes us from 1964 to 1998 - see www.pmvideo.co.uk

Music - Dvorak - Symphony No. 9 "From the New World" - 1st movement

  • @oligsk8 whippersnapper - dictionary results

    Pronunciation [hwip-er-snap-er, wip-] Show IPA

    noun

an unimportant but offensively presumptuous person, esp. a young one.

166575; prob. b. earlier whipster and snippersnapper, similar in sense; see whip, snap, -er 1

  • Ref the video response above:-

At the end of this video we see Bittern in blue livery in 1970. The response shows the loco on the ECML 1/3/2008

  • One of two thing I wish I had been around to see, steam in hay day (Born in 64, by the time I was aware of trains it was all gone) and the other being the Dreadnoughts of WW1. Funny when I think of it they are so alike in many ways, But at least Steam Trains live on despite BR.

  • That little lad on the film was also born in 1964! I wish I'd had a video camera in those days - a four minute film cost 27 shillings (£1.35) and I was on about fourteen pounds a week with a house and family to support! Still, now there is so much to enjoy - wish I could go back for a week!

  • The state of most steam engines in 1967 was deplorable. Where I lived (down south) you could hear the clonking made by Bulleid pacifics from a long way off because of the worn wheel journals and this led to the wheel resonating. Everything was filthy and the lack of care was obvious. Why this policy was in action beats me- these engines were deliberately run down for no good reason whilst most of the diesel replacements turned out to be less than worthwhile.Waste became a national obsession.

  • Fantastic footage, thanks for sharing it!!

  • @WBDE locos so marked had no clearance to operate on electrified sections.

  • BTW I guess most people here dislike diesels but search for "Baby Deltic" and see a totally amazing new beast.

  • @nylonTS Sounds more like "Derwent" which was on the platform at Darlington.

  • Thank you for sharing these Wonderful memories

  • Wonderful video and a good choice of musci. Could anyone tell me the significance of the yellow diagonal stripe through the engine number on the cab?

  • can anyone please tell me something

I used to travel through york staion in the 1960 and I remmember a very old steam engine on the platform is this correct and what was it and where is it now

  • its sad to see how unloved these engines were even at this time, i do believe they were the closest thing man has created to a living being,

  • Wonderfully evocative film, bringing back happy memories of times gone by..Thanks ....Bob
