Lord Gregory - The Lass of Roch Royan
Ewan MacColl
The English and Scottish Popular Ballads Vol. 2 Child Ballads
Child Ballad No. 76
Also known as Fair Anny, Oh Open the Door Lord Gregory, and Mirk Mirk.
Fair Annie, along with her newborn son, comes to Gregory's castle, pleading to be let in. She is called a wild woman, turned aways as a warlock or a mermaid of the sea. She offers to show the rings on her fingers that will prove who she is and but is still refused. In the morning Lord Gregory awakens and tells his mother of the dream he had of his true love laying dead at his feet. His mother then tells him that Fair Annie had been there in the night but that she would not let her in nor wake up Lord Gregory. Gregory then rushes to the sea side, but it is too late. The baby has drowned and can't be found. Fair Annie's body washes ashore at his feet and she is dead also. The song ends with Lord Gregory cursing his mother wishing cruel death upon her.
As cold and beautiful as the dawn.
