Many wolves today like Todd Bentley, Patricia King, and Benny Hinn as well as many orthodox Christians like John Piper and Wayne Grudem claim that the gift of tongues hasn't ceased, but is the gift of tongues available today? Listen as Dr. Alan Cairns answers this question from Scripture.

For a dissenting opinion on this matter by John Piper for comparing and contrasting, click the following link.:

(Please note that I am allowing all comments on this video (within reason - no vulgarity, obscenities, etc.) This topic is what is classified as an "in-house" debate. What this doesn't mean, though is that everyone who either affirms or denies tongues being in operation today is necessarily a Christian. There are, however, Christians on both sides of the issue.)

  • He's wrong. Gift of tongues is not the ability to speak in foreign languages. This presumes the gift is given so that those of a foreign tongue might understand what is being spoken through the one who has the gift of tongues. But the instances where the gift is given in Acts, there are no foreigners. Acts 19, Paul comes upon some believers. Why would the gift fall on them if they all were of the same tongue? Or should we presume these few all spoke different languages? Cairns is wrong.

  • I'm a born again christian and i speak in tougnes in prayer everyday. They will cease when perfection has come, and that hasnt happened yet!! (take a look around)

  • I SPEAK IN TONGUES EVERYDAY...WE MINISTER TO PEOPLE IN THE STREETS AND BRING THEM INTO THE CHURCH...BAPTIZE THEM IN THE NAME OF JESUS AND WATCH THEM SPEAK IN TONGUES....YOU NEED TO READ YOUR WORD AGAIN AND PRAY AND SEE IF YOU HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT...GOD BLESS YOU

  • [1 Corinthians 14]... "He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself"... "Anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit...Anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind."

  • YOU ARE WRONG!!!! me LexiCON Friend

  • Picking of a few scritures to prove what is stated is a gross misuse of knowledge. For instance using just 1 Corinthians 14:2. Read all the scriptures 1 Corinthians 14:1-40 Heads up on Verse five and six. Pay attention to Verse 12 and verse 13 as well. The "church" is Christ Jesus! We are to edify Christ, not ourself. You can smack your lips all you want, but Our God is not the author of "confusion" Speaking in unknown tongues without understanding is "confusion." Pastor W. M. Shoap

  • If God wants us to be careful with our words for the Glory of Himself and ministry to others, why would he want us to speak in tongues? Does one go up to a nonbeliever and start speaking in tongues? No, it doesn't convict.

Besides what is the point of speaking in tongues? Is it an advantage over other believers that don't have the gift of tongues by being closer to the Holy Spirit? Aren't we all saved equally? I think the Bible refers spiritual gifts as a means to spread the Gospel.

  • I used to go to a church that had people speak in tongues. I always wondered why they never had to interpret it as the Bible said they were to. It usually ends in mass confusion opposite of what the Bible says should happen in church. I agree with Dr. Cairns. The charismatic perspective of tongues and Acts 2 is wrong. You don't spread an idea by speaking something people don't know what you're saying. You spread it by word of mouth with people understanding it. It's called sentence structure.

  • this guy has book knowledge but no spiritual understanding.

  • @markp201channel good response. Tongues are a gift for a sign only. there is no power in tongues. its only a sign for the unbeliever. Tongues helps to edify the individual that has that gift.

  • I'm praying that the Holy Spirit falls upon him one day and he is blessed with the Gift of Tougues!! And after that happens, he should post a response to his own video!!!

  • @markp201channel - Check your KJV. That's an English version and not greek. Hope this helps.
