SelectPlusG-8 Summit Ends, Bush Claims ProgressG-8 Summit Ends, Bush Claims ProgressThe Associated PressAt his last G-8 summit as U.S. president, George Bush says G-8 leaders made 'significant progress' on the goals addressed, including global warming and poverty in Africa. (July 9)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] [Notes:group photo op]It was an unprecedented meeting on global warming -- but apparently NOT a meeting of the minds. At the G8 summit in Japan's northern mountains, rich-world and developing-country leaders came together to pledge an assault on rising temperatures. [Notes:file pollution] But China, India and other developing countries would NOT sign up to specific targets for curbing heat- trapping pollution, not even the cautious G8 goal of halving it by mid-century. [Notes:Bush at G8]Yet President Bush was pleased with the summit's outcomeBUSH SOT: "We made progress, significant progress, toward a comprehensive approach." [Notes:Hu Jintao at G8]But China's Hu Jintao says it's STILL up to the RICH world to take the lead on global warming -- and HIS country must STILL make its economy job one. [Notes:Protestors in Sapporo, Japan] To protesters, the result was yet more evidence these leaders don't get it -- and they might as well have been here on vacation.SOT: Stuart McWilliam, spokesman of Oxfam International: "what we have got here today is people dress up as G8 leaders on holiday in Japan because we believe that the G8 has failed to take decisive action on the issues of climate change and poverty." [Notes:Bush at G8]However, the president thinks this summit did well on poverty in Africa, too ... [Notes:Africa poverty file, disease file] ...bolstering previous aid programs and launching new initiatives to fight malaria and AIDS.BUSH SOT: (near end of statement) "Lot of meetings on importnat subjects and we accomplishd a lot." [Notes:Bush walkoff, group photo pan]It was Bush's last word - on his last G8 summit. By the time the G8 gathers next year on an island off Italy, there'll be a new leader in America's seat at the table of the world's most exclusive political club.MS, The Associated Press, at the G8 summit, Toyako, Japan ___ ___, The Associated Press

How can you tell countries just developing real infrastructure that they must destroy all their carbon producing power plants and rebuild costly solar and wind farms. Give them a chance to get up and running first.
