Peggy Lee not only sang "He's A Tramp", she wrote it (with Sonny Burke) along with several other numbers for Disney's 1955 animated classic "Lady & The Tramp". Peggy also sued the Walt Disney Co. claiming she retained the rights to much of the music in this film; a suit she ultimately won but it delayed the release of the movie on videotape for years.

  • @000sundancer000 You might be able to purchase a copy of it on the internet or even via e-bay.com. Try a search on "Song Of The South Video" and see what that brings up. It's indeed unfortunate that current U.S. social and political considerations have prevented this film from being released by Disney in the U.S.

  • @Nocaro Is there a way I can see Song of the South? My mom saw it in the theater, loved it, and has always wanted to see it again. Since it was before my time, i never had the honor of being able to enjoy it. I really think the next generation should be able to see it and it's a crime that it's being banned from viewing. it's a free country and we should be able to see this movie!!!

  • @CrankDatJonasBoi We're speaking of the "classics", those Disney features finished prior to 1966 before Disney died and which Walt Disney himself actually produced.

  • @Nocaro how is it the last one if the little mermaid, aladdin and the Lion King were all released on VHS? I have them on vhs

  • Why didn't they put this song in Fallout:New Vegas.

  • @Nocaro By 1987 all of the Disney animated classics with the exception of "Lady & The Tramp" (and possibly "Fantasia" and definitely "Song of the South" which still has not been released in any format in the US) had already been released to video. From what I was told by the Disney people was the release of "Lady & The Tramp" was the result of some partial or full settlement of Peggy's lawsuit. The "Song of the South" non-release is strictly a "political" issue involving the NAACP.

  • @Nocaro Points well taken. Maybe the distribution people were referring to a re-release of the original video. :) You can google "Peggy Lee Is Suing Disney NY Times," a Nov 17 1988 article. It says: "Disney spokesman said the cassette version of Lady and the Tramp has sold 3.5 million cassettes since it was released in 1987, earning $90 million." Cassette refers to videocassette; I have a copy of that 1987 version. This video was re-released again in 1998 and 1999 and then the DVD in 2006.

  • @Carambabambasamba Of all the Disney animated classics, this was the last one released on videotape. I owned a chain of video stores at the time and recall having many conversations about this film with Disney's distribution people. The reason for this being the last one released was, they said at the time, Peggy's lawsuit. No contention is being made that this is the recording from the soundtrack but her "original" recording for media airplay.

  • Very nice pics, thanks, but there are a number of errors in the write-up. Far from being delayed, the videotape was originally released in 1987, before the lawsuit. Peggy's lawsuit was not over retention of rights to the music, but over whether a clause in the original contract allowed the artist to share in Disney's profits from video sales. Also, the version that we hear in this clip is not the one that Peg sings in the movie, but a more adult version that she recorded for her label, Decca.

  • classic movie..classic tune...thank you as always Lanny...Jeff
