You got the kiai wrong, the kiai of this kata is performed as You gyaku tsuki, not as You ashi barai

What the heck is that "OSSU" movement on the beginning? It has nothing to do in goju kata and in the goju itself, its purely an stupid invention of kyokushin.

@allesinmetaal Thanks for your reply! I've seen kata in which some moves have been deleted, and I can only guess at the reasons, e.g., to simplify for beginners; to streamline for speed; to hide "secret" techniques; or to change the meaning (some techniques may become obsolete). I suspect some subtle movements were lost as karate-do was added to public schools in Japan. Also, kata is like the telephone game. Information changes as it's transmitted. I accept the fact that katas do change.

@weaseldragon in our dojo we teach the harai uke with a very definite circular motion, don't see the point of not doing so.

I learned Kata #1 first. High punch, high punch, high punch, high punch, high block, high block, hick block, high block, middle puch, etc...

But Jo  Chu Gai is often the first you learn (hope I spelled that right)

This is the first kata that you learn after the Kumitai kata.

Btw I hope this all makes sense, my learning may not be the same as yours. For example, I didn't understnad the terms weaseldragon used, I use seperate terms like Morote Tsuki = Moswukai for me

wasn't bad, but there are quite a few things wrong with it. well compared to what my sensei showed me. we learn the more traditional method higaonna sensei's way, not his students way.

but that's the purpose of this kata. It was designed so that a complete lay man can pick up karate in the first place. However you have only learnt 1/100 the meaning of a kata if you can just mimic it.
