  • So I have to ask, is there an actual studio audience on this show? I watch it occasionally but it sounds like they use a laugh track and I have never seen the camera pan out to the audience.

  • @Bilawaski There is indeed. But a pretty small one. I'd guess about 75-100 people. They are encouraged to laugh at certain points, which is probably why it seems like a laugh track on TV.

  • Wow!! I could not believe that the first priest of the Shaolin Temple was actually from India!! A monk from India created the Shaolin temple!! Boddhidharma!! How many of you knew that??!!

  • @MrSeekerofjustice He was indeed from India. Buddhism was born in India and missionaries took it to China.

  • Great book Matt. I loved your book. I got a friend who is serving time and i sent him your book to read and he loved it. Thanks for providing a great story to my friend.

  • @SmokeCheck4 Thanks you, my friend. That's a very kind things of you to say. And I'm very happy to hear that your friend serving time enjoyed it as well.

  • First time I'm seeing this, Matt. You are a funny guy!

  • Yo! I just finished reading your book, "American Shaolin." You're a huge inspiration for me now Matt, I'm only 15 now and I've always been interested in martial arts as well. Since I like Bruce Lee, do you think Jeet Kune Do would be a good style for me to pick up? How are the monks and Coach Cheng doing? Did you visit them recently? Later man!

  • @AstralVids Hey, thanks for the kind note. I'm very happy you enjoyed it. A friend of mine took the cover photo for a Burger King ad for their new vegetarian burger in Asia. BK didn't go with the photo, so I was fortunate enough to be able to use it. Amituofo, Matt

  • Man, this book was hilarious and this video was hilarious too. Nice book, at first I was cautious but as soon as I saw Burger King on the cover. It had to be read. LOL. Great book I had it for summer reading

  • @grantjackson108

    "American Shaolin", mate

  • Whats your book called mate?

  • @maxtaylor1410

They assign my book at Vanderbilt?! That is awesome to hear. And thank you for your kind words about it. I'm glad some "muthafucka"s have snuck into the Ivory Towers and perverted a few minds.

  • @1robertpolson

    Amitoufu, Thank you brother.

  • Im just after re-reading it, Loved it.

  • matt polly, you single-handedly made modern chinese history at vanderbilt an amazing class. i've read your book 6 times now!

  • Matthew I happened to find your book in a bookstore, and since I have the same love of Shaolin that you do, I picked it up and gave it a read. It is the funniest book I have read in a loooong time. It was a really easy read, and has great insight as to what Shaolin life is like (or was back in the 90s). Hopefully I can fulfill my "bucket list" item and train there one day as well. Btw, did you ever get around to meeting Dashan? (rofl!)

  • Hello Matthew! I have just finished reading your 'un-put-downable' book. It has been a while since a book has gripped me so much. For around 13 years, I (sort of) practised shaolin kung fu (am no good!) and so reading your descriptions of training regimes, sparring sessions and techniques was so enjoyable. Most of all, your book has served as a gentle but firm jolt to review my 40-year-old experience in this earth bound journey. So....A BIG THANK YOU!

    Bernadine (Malta, Europe)

  • I'm sure you will do well. Just be brash. Freak out their pre-conceptions. I wish you all the best in your path.

  • Thank you my friend! I am going to china for the Air Force so I'm trying to gear up for what ever is to come!

  • I hope you enjoyed it.

  • The Chinese didn't really know what to do with african americans. americans are "laowai"; africans are "heiren" (black people). so it would probably depend on the chinese person in question.

  • hey matt, would an african american be considered as a "Laowai"?
