making our computer's faster does not improve either our health, or our intellect. That is the difference.

Of course, this sort of endeavor is neither cost effective, nor profitable, so it will likely never happen, but it is just an example.

that is indeed the real question. forgive me for not having all the answers. I just love thought provoking questions. I suppose how we improve ourselves varies from person to person. even from country to country. for example, the USA could afford to put a lot more effort and money into getting good quality food into people's homes. that would improve the health of a lot of people, and thus would be an improvement to as well as for the individual.
